This is the softer, heavier of our two Groton crewnecks, the one that becomes the three-days-a-week sweatshirt from October on. Smooth face, rich print, no scratchy tag. If you want the sweatshirt that feels like a favorite on day one, this is it; order now for cold weather and holiday giving.

This unisex soft cotton sweatshirt is cut true to size from a medium-heavy 9.9 oz fabric — 80% cotton, 20% polyester — that feels substantial without weighing you down. Our retro artwork prints in rich detail on the smooth cotton-rich surface; ribbed-knit cuffs and collar, reinforced side seams, and twill neck tape keep everything crisp wash after wash; and the tear-away label means no scratchy tag. Machine washable, ethically printed on demand, and made to become a favorite.

Groton split from New London in 1705 on the east bank of the Thames, where a deep harbor made it a shipbuilding town. On September 6, 1781, Colonel William Ledyard’s 164 militia made their stand at Fort Griswold against Benedict Arnold’s 800; the 134-foot Groton Monument of 1830 honors the fallen on Groton Heights.

Electric Boat built seventy-four diesel submarines here in the Second World War, and on January 21, 1954, launched the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world. She is berthed today at the Submarine Force Museum, free to walk through. Avery Point and Bluff Point face Fishers Island Sound. The mark on this piece is the boats that disappear.

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Our Groton logo carries the same emblem every Merlin Classics Connecticut town wears — an oyster above "Connecticut, Est. 1636," the colony's founding year, rendered in hand-printed black and white with a worn, vintage feel. The oyster is the shoreline state's mark, the through-line that ties Groton to every other Connecticut town we make. What makes this one Groton is everything around it: the submarine harbor, the monument on the heights, the deep Thames water. On a tee or a cap it reads less like a souvenir and more like a small piece of the Connecticut coast — Est. 1636, worn plain.

The fish chapter is the one almost nobody remembers. In 1927, Atlantic Coast Fisheries bought the old Groton Iron Works yard and turned its cavernous steel sheds into something startlingly modern: a plant that filleted haddock, froze each fillet solid on aluminum plates, and wrapped it in crisp new Cellophane — individually quick-frozen seafood a full generation before it reached the average American grocer. Fortune magazine marveled at an operation built for ten million fillets a year, its lines run in part by rows of women at automatic wrapping machines. It was ahead of its time in the most literal sense: the fish were landed up in Boston, too far to stay competitive, and the Depression left shoppers wanting the cheapest food, not the finest. Barely four years after it opened, the plant went quiet. The future had arrived too early to survive.
