The Groton Original Art Series tee, for the town that is the Submarine Capital of the World. The classy town logo on the front and Groton’s own artwork, bold and full-size, on the back.

Choose the Art Series tee when the logo tee is too quiet: heavyweight garment-dyed cotton with a lived-in hand and the Groton artwork printed large across the back. It is the Groton shirt people stop you to ask about.

A refined essential: heavyweight, garment-dyed premium 6.1 oz ring-spun U.S. cotton with a soft, lived-in hand that keeps its structure. The relaxed, straight silhouette and tubular knit body layer effortlessly, double-needle hems and a smooth, tag-free neckline wear comfortably, and the design puts our classy city logo on the front with bold original art on the back. Broken-in from day one, built to last, and at home with worn denim or a sharp blazer.

Groton split from New London in 1705 on the east bank of the Thames, where a deep harbor made it a shipbuilding town. On September 6, 1781, Colonel William Ledyard’s 164 militia made their stand at Fort Griswold against Benedict Arnold’s 800; the 134-foot Groton Monument of 1830 honors the fallen on Groton Heights.

Electric Boat built seventy-four diesel submarines here in the Second World War, and on January 21, 1954, launched the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world. She is berthed today at the Submarine Force Museum, free to walk through. Avery Point and Bluff Point face Fishers Island Sound. The mark on this piece is the boats that disappear.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

And that's only half of it. This one patch of ground has lived four industrial lives. It built steel cargo ships in the First World War. It became one of the most advanced fish plants in America in 1927. It launched submarines in the Second World War — the boats that made Groton the Submarine Capital of the World. And in 1946 it started brewing penicillin by the ton. Ships, fish, submarines, medicine — the same riverbank, reinvented again and again.

But the buildings stood. In 1946 Pfizer bought the yard for under a million dollars and filled those same halls with towering fermentation tanks. Groton went on to brew penicillin by the ton — enough to supply most of the United States and half the world — and helped drive the price of the miracle drug from twenty dollars a dose down to under two cents. The antibiotics perfected here traveled with medics to the front-line MASH tents of Korea, and then reached everyone else. Today that rocky point on Eastern Point holds a gleaming research campus where nearly every one of the company's medicines is shaped, in part. From a fish dock to a cure that circled the globe — the same half-mile of Thames riverbank.
