A black panther asleep in the middle of Main Street, a red bow at its neck. The 150-year-old insult Fort Worth turned into its name.

In 1875 a Dallas lawyer wrote that Fort Worth was so quiet he had seen a panther sleeping undisturbed in the street. Fort Worth took it as a compliment. The fire company painted a panther on its wagon, the police put one on the badge, and Panther City became the name the town calls itself when it wants to needle Dallas.

The panther is still on the badge, still on the fire trucks, still in the name of the hotel and the half of the city that likes the joke. Dallas has never quite lived it down.

Every rivalry needs a mascot, and Fort Worth's is a cat that would rather nap. On the glass it is doing exactly that, with the storefronts and a hitched horse behind.

Panther City is Fort Worth's own nickname, earned from a sleeping panther in an insult that the town turned into a badge. The Fort Worth panther is older than Cowtown and the Fort Worth Stockyards. This panther ornament is a Fort Worth Christmas ornament and souvenir for anyone who knows the history.

Every Fort Worth ornament ships ready to give. Hang it on the tree, in a window, off a lamp, or send one to the person who misses Fort Worth most.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

So Fort Worth gathers a frontier fort, a cattle trail, and a living stockyard onto the banks of the Trinity. Our Fort Worth designs gather that into wearable form. Wear the history. Fort Worth, Texas — Cowtown, where the West begins and the cattle still walk Exchange Avenue.

Cowtown built its own celebrations. In 1896 the city held its first Stock Show, a livestock exhibition that grew into the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo — one of the oldest and largest in the country, running every winter for more than a century. The early-1900s oil boom poured new money into town, and frontier legend mixed with it: the Sundance Kid and his Wild Bunch passed through Fort Worth, posing in 1900 for the famous "Fort Worth Five" photograph, and the downtown entertainment district that rose later took the name Sundance Square in their memory.

Why People Visit Fort Worth

Visitors come to Fort Worth for the rare combination it offers: a real working cowboy past in the Stockyards, where the longhorns still walk, and a world-class art scene minutes away in the Cultural District. Add Sundance Square, the Water Gardens, the Botanic Garden, and the winter rodeo, and a single day can hold cattle pens and fine paintings. Proud, friendly, and unmistakably Texan, Fort Worth rewards anyone who wants the West and the wider world in the same town.
