The Clinton Original Art Series tee, for the town that is where Yale held its first class. The classy town logo on the front and Clinton’s own artwork, bold and full-size, on the back.

Choose the Art Series tee when the logo tee is too quiet: heavyweight garment-dyed cotton with a lived-in hand and the Clinton artwork printed large across the back. It is the Clinton shirt people stop you to ask about.

The Original Art Series tee crafted from soft heavy weight garment-dyed premium 6.1 oz ring-spun U.S. cotton pairs a soft, lived-in hand with enduring structure. A relaxed, straight silhouette and tubular knit body deliver clean lines that layer effortlessly, while double-needle hems and a smooth, tag-free neckline ensure long-wear comfort. Finished with our classy city logo on the front with bold original art on the back, it’s a refined essential that feels broken-in from day one yet built to last — designed to complement everything from worn denim to a sharp blazer.

Settled in 1663 and named Kenilworth in 1667, Clinton is where the Collegiate School that became Yale held its first classes from 1701 to 1707 in Reverend Abraham Pierson’s parsonage. Adam Stanton built his Federal mansion and general store on that exact site in 1789–91, and the store’s original stock is still inside; the town took its own name in 1838, for DeWitt Clinton of New York.

The 1750 Elisha White House is the oldest brick house on the shoreline between New Haven and New London, Clinton Harbor and the town beach face the Sound at the mouth of the Hammonasset, and Hammonasset Beach State Park lies next door. The mark on this piece is the town where Yale began.

The twentieth century brought the shoreline a new role. As railroads and then Interstate 95 tied the coast to the cities, Clinton grew into a shoreline suburban community — a place to live and summer as much as to work the water. Schools, neighborhoods, and beach colonies filled in behind the harbor; the marinas filled with pleasure boats where the oyster schooners had anchored; and the premium outlets by the highway now draw shoppers from across the state to a town that once shipped its wealth out by water. The Town Beach and its neighbors made the shore a family destination, and the harbor filled with weekend sails.

The Collegiate School's founding here was no accident of geography: its first rector, the Reverend Abraham Pierson, was the town's own minister, and for the school's first years the whole college was wherever Pierson happened to be teaching — his parsonage, in what is now Clinton. He died in 1707 and lies here still; the school moved to Saybrook that year and then, in 1716, to New Haven, taking the name Yale College in 1718 for its benefactor Elihu Yale. Clinton kept the beginning: Pierson's bronze statue stands on East Main Street, and the elementary school around the corner carries his name. For its first fifteen years the college had no campus at all — Yale's oldest classroom, Clinton likes to say, was a minister's front room.

Why People Visit Clinton

Clinton offers the Connecticut shoreline at its most relaxed — a real harbor town with beaches, marinas, and a colonial Main Street, plus the surprising distinction of being where Yale began. Visitors come for the water, the history, and the easy shoreline pace, and stay for the beaches, the harbor, and the oysters.
