Prairie Dog Town. He is standing at the door of his house with his hands folded, watching you. There are a few hundred more of him behind that mound, and they have all noticed you too.

In 1935, Kennedy Burns and his wife Lucille put four prairie dogs in a fenced enclosure in Lubbock's Mackenzie Park. The animals were being poisoned across the plains at the time - ranchers considered them vermin, and the great colonies that once stretched for miles were disappearing fast. The Burnses thought somebody ought to keep some. Prairie Dog Town is still there, still free to visit, and the descendants of those four are still standing at their burrows watching tourists.

The black-tailed prairie dog is a keystone species: its burrows shelter burrowing owls and rattlesnakes, its grazing shapes the grassland, and its disappearance takes a great deal else with it. A small municipal park on the Llano Estacado turns out to have been an early act of conservation, undertaken mostly because two people found them worth keeping.
