Feral Rooster. They are everywhere. Parking lots, beaches, trailheads, the roof of your rental car at six in the morning. On Kauai the rooster is not livestock and not wildlife - it is a resident.

The usual explanation runs through the storms. Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Iniki in 1992 tore across the island and, among much greater damage, destroyed coops and scattered domestic birds into the valleys. There they met the moa - the jungle fowl Polynesian voyagers brought to the islands centuries earlier - and the populations mixed. With no mongoose on Kauai to check them, the birds did what birds do. The island has been loudly theirs ever since.

Every visitor complains about them and every resident defends them, and that contradiction is the most Kauai thing imaginable. They are a living record of two arrivals separated by a thousand years, plus one very bad afternoon in September 1992, walking around in broad daylight demanding your lunch.
