Nearby, the Spouting Horn forces the surf up through a lava tube and throws spray forty or fifty feet into the air with a rumbling hiss that local tradition ties to a moʻo — a legendary lizard trapped in the rock. And the National Tropical Botanical Garden headquarters its national network here: the Allerton and McBryde Gardens fill the Lāwaʻi Valley with one of the world's great plant collections, a short drive from the beach towels. The valley has royal history of its own: Queen Emma summered at Lāwaʻi in the 1870s, and the cottage tradition she began matured into the Allerton estate whose garden rooms — fountains, bamboo groves, the Moreton Bay figs that starred in Jurassic Park — anchor the collection today.
