The Old Lyme Original Art Series tee, for the town that gave American Impressionism its home. The classy town logo on the front and Old Lyme’s own artwork, bold and full-size, on the back.

Choose the Art Series tee when the logo tee is too quiet: heavyweight garment-dyed cotton with a lived-in hand and the Old Lyme artwork printed large across the back. It is the Old Lyme shirt people stop you to ask about.

Soft, heavyweight, garment-dyed 6.1 oz ring-spun U.S. cotton gives this Original Art Series tee its broken-in feel and lasting structure. It has a relaxed, straight silhouette, a tubular knit body for clean lines, double-needle hems, and a smooth, tag-free neckline. Our classy city logo is on the front and bold original art on the back — a refined essential designed to complement worn denim or a sharp blazer.

Old Lyme was settled in 1665 as part of Lyme and incorporated under its own name in 1855, a Federal-era town of mansions on Lyme Street where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. In 1899 painters began boarding at Florence Griswold’s yellow 1817 mansion, and the Lyme Art Colony they formed there became the birthplace of American Impressionism.

The Griswold House is now a museum with the colony’s paintings still on its walls, the Lyme Art Association gallery stands next door, and the beaches at White Sands and Soundview face the Sound. In 1975 Yale researchers identified Lyme disease here, which is the other reason the name travels. The mark on this piece belongs to the painters.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

The colony's artists painted 41 panels directly onto the doors and dining-room walls of the boarding house — a tradition that began as a paint-off in 1900.

Our Old Lyme retro logo carries Connecticut's clam shell over "Connecticut · Est. 1636," tying the town to the colonial founding of Connecticut — the shared emblem of every Merlin Classics Connecticut place. Printed black-and-white with the worn look of an old oyster-crate label, the shell reads as the shoreline in shorthand: tidal, coastal, salt-aired. What makes this one Old Lyme is the story behind it — the boarding house, the painted doors, and the birthplace of American Impressionism.
