The McAllen tee, for the town that is the City of Palms on the Rio Grande. A classic unisex heavy cotton t-shirt with the McAllen vintage retro logo on the chest in white: the default McAllen shirt, and the one most people start with.

This is the everyday McAllen shirt: medium-weight cotton that holds up to real washing, a crewneck that fits everyone, and a logo that reads as a crest rather than a billboard. Buy it for yourself, buy a second for the person who keeps saying they want one, and it ships free in the U.S.

This unisex heavy cotton t-shirt is cut in a classic fit from medium-weight jersey, with a crewneck, tubular construction, and taped shoulders for durability. DTG-printed design. Solid colors are 100% cotton; select heather/antique shades may use cotton–poly blends.

The Santa Anita Ranch was a Spanish land grant of 1797; the railway reached it in 1904 and the McAllen Townsite Company, named for Irish-born rancher John McAllen, was founded on December 5 that year. The city incorporated in 1911, and some 20,000 New York Guardsmen were stationed here in 1916.

The City of Palms nickname was set by 1940. Quinta Mazatlan, a 1930s Spanish Revival adobe mansion, is now the World Birding Center, in a valley where more than 540 bird species have been recorded, in citrus country where Texas turns tropical and two countries share one valley. The City of Palms is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

A land-grant ranch, a railroad town, a bridge between nations, and a sky full of green jays — McAllen wears its story lightly, the way the palms wear the wind. From the Santa Anita grant of 1797 to the bi-national valley of today, every era left something worth keeping: the palms, the music, the citrus gold, the family names on both banks of the river. City of Palms. Heart of the Rio Grande Valley. Wear a little of it wherever the road takes you.

And the birds know no border at all. McAllen is one of North America's great birding destinations: the Valley sits on the central flyway funnel where more than 500 species have been recorded, and Quinta Mazatlán — a 1930s Spanish Revival adobe mansion turned World Birding Center site — keeps fifteen acres of native forest in the middle of the city. The green jay, the Valley's dazzling signature bird, is an everyday sight here and almost nowhere else in the United States; winter Texans and birders arrive together every year when the north turns cold.

Why People Visit McAllen

McAllen offers something rare — a subtropical Texas city where world-class birding, citrus country, and a living bi-national culture all sit within easy reach. Visitors come for the palms and the birds, stay for the food and the warmth, and leave understanding why this corner of Texas calls itself the City of Palms.
