The Fairfield tote, for the town that rebuilt itself after the British burned it in 1779. Heavy 12 oz cotton canvas with the Fairfield vintage retro logo printed on both sides in white.

The tote is the Fairfield piece that gets used daily: groceries, books, a towel for the beach, the farmers’ market on Saturday. It is flat to mail, so it is also the simplest Fairfield gift to send to someone out of state. Ships free in the U.S.

Clean and minimalist, this everyday tote is made from heavy 12 oz (407 g/m²) cotton canvas with the retro logo printed on both sides. It comes in one 15" × 16" size with 20" self-fabric shoulder handles and a sewn-in label — sturdy 100% cotton canvas for errands, books, or groceries.

The Pequot War ended at the Great Swamp Fight here in 1637, and Roger Ludlow founded Fairfield two years later. On July 7, 1779, Tryon’s raid burned most of the original town; the 1755 Powell House survived, and the village rebuilt in the Federal style along the Old Post Road through the 1820s.

Greenfield Hill holds one of the largest concentrations of intact Federal and Colonial homes in New England, the 1874 Penfield Reef Light stands a mile and a half offshore, and Sherwood Island, Connecticut’s first state park, opened on this shore in 1914. Fairfield University arrived in 1942 and Sacred Heart in 1963. The mark on this piece is the Old Post Road town.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

The four squares grew into a seat of government: Fairfield served as the county seat of Fairfield County from 1666 until 1853, its courthouse and green the legal center of southwestern Connecticut. The town lived on farming, fishing, and coastal trade, and its records carry one of New England’s notable early legal stories — in 1654 Mary Staples of Fairfield became the first woman tried for witchcraft in Connecticut, and was acquitted, thirty-eight years before the Salem trials began.

Fairfield was founded in September 1639 by Roger Ludlow, the English lawyer who months earlier had been principal drafter of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut — adopted January 14, 1639, and often called the first written constitution in the colonies. Ludlow rode southwest from Windsor and laid out his new town on four squares — one for himself, one for the minister, one for civic buildings, one for a town common — on coastal land its native people called Uncoway, purchased from the Paugussett-related bands who had farmed and fished this shore for centuries; their descendants remain. Two years earlier the Pequot War had ended near here at the Great Swamp in present-day Southport — a final defeat in which many Pequot people were killed — and the town’s founding followed in its wake. The name the settlers chose described what they saw: fair fields, the broad salt meadows along the Sound.

Why People Visit Fairfield Connecticut

Fairfield offers a deep colonial history, a National Register town green, the Federal-era Burr Mansion and surrounding streetscape, the Greenfield Hill village preserved intact from before the Revolution, an offshore lighthouse, four miles of Sound beaches, and the original Boston Post Road running through the middle of it all. Visitors come for the museum and the green, the Federal architecture along Beach Road, the Greenfield Hill drive in apple season, the Pequot Library, Jennings Beach in summer, and the simple shoreline pleasures of a town that was founded by the lawyer who wrote America's first constitution and rebuilt itself after the British burned it down. It is layered, walkable, and very Connecticut.
