The Big Island heavy crewneck, for the island that is still being built. A classic 50/50 fleece sweatshirt with the Big Island vintage retro logo on the chest in white: the plain, durable one.

Choose this crewneck for durability and price: classic fit, ribbed collar and cuffs, a fleece that shrugs off years of washing. It is the Big Island sweatshirt to buy in twos, one for home and one for the person who grew up there, and it ships free in the U.S.

This heavy crewneck sweatshirt is cut in a classic unisex fit from medium-heavy fleece, with a ribbed collar, cuffs & waistband, double-needle seams, and a tear-away label. The design is DTG-printed. Fabric is a standard 8.0 oz 50% cotton/50% polyester (Heather Sport colors 60/40). White may appear off-white; the Orange hue may vary.

The Island of Hawaiʻi is larger than all the other islands combined, about 4,028 square miles, and still growing: Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and Mauna Loa the largest by volume, while Mauna Kea, 13,803 feet, is the tallest mountain on Earth measured from its base. People have lived here since about 1000 to 1200 CE.

Kamehameha fought his unification campaigns from this island, Cook died at Kealakekua Bay in 1779, the first missionaries landed at Kailua-Kona in 1820 and Parker Ranch was founded in 1847. Eight of the world’s climate zones share one island, from snow on Mauna Kea to the black sand of Punaluʻu and the green sand of Papakōlea. The island still being built is the mark on this piece.

Product FAQs

How does your sizing work?

Every item is made to order, so please check the size chart on this page before you buy. Women's fitted tees run small; size up for a looser fit. Caps are one size with an adjustable strap.

How are items made and when will they arrive?

We make each item to order using premium blanks, embroidery and soft-hand prints. Production takes 2-5 business days (weekends and holidays excluded), then 4-10 days in transit via USPS, UPS or FedEx to U.S. addresses; most orders arrive within 6-15 business days. You'll get a tracking link the moment it ships. Any current shipping offer is shown in the bar at the top of every page and applies automatically at checkout, no code needed.

How do I send a gift?

Enter the recipient's address as the shipping address and your own as the billing address at checkout. Nothing ships with a price; the package includes a plain packing slip. Tracking goes to your email, not theirs. For birthdays and holidays, order two weeks ahead to be safe.

What's the return policy?

Made-to-order items can't be returned or exchanged for size or color, so please use the size chart and photos before ordering. If anything arrives defective, misprinted or damaged, send a photo and your order number within 30 days and we'll replace it or refund you.

How do I care for my item?

Apparel: wash cold, inside out, with like colors; no bleach; tumble dry low or hang dry. Embroidered pieces: iron inside out to protect the stitching. Caps: spot clean. Printed glasses and water bottles: hand wash only, no dishwasher, so the artwork lasts. Mugs and engraved glasses are dishwasher safe. Any item-specific care notes are in the description above.

Who makes this?

Merlin Classics is a small Connecticut brand making original retro designs for the towns people love. Every piece is printed, embroidered or engraved to order in the USA, and the business supports hunger relief in the communities our collections celebrate.

To manage the wild cattle, ranchers brought Mexican vaqueros to the island in the 1830s; they trained Hawaiian riders, who became the paniolo — Hawaiʻi's cowboys, named from español. Parker Ranch took root in Waimea in 1847 and grew into one of the largest ranches in the United States. The coffee belt rose in the Kona uplands, and the great volcanoes drew the world: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was established in 1916 around Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, and the summit of Mauna Kea — sacred in Hawaiian culture and the tallest mountain on Earth base-to-peak — became home to world-class observatories. Two coasts, snow and lava, coffee and cattle: an island that is never quite finished.

Native Hawaiians settled Hawaiʻi Island roughly a thousand years ago, and it became the seat of the chief who would unite the islands: Kamehameha I, born in the Kohala district, had brought the major islands together under the Hawaiian Kingdom by 1795. In 1793 Captain George Vancouver had given Kamehameha a gift of cattle, which were set loose and multiplied across the uplands — the start of the island's ranch country. The first American missionaries landed at Kailua-Kona in 1820, and through the nineteenth century the island took on coffee, sugar, and cattle alongside its Hawaiian traditions. It is the largest of the Hawaiian Islands and, geologically, the youngest — still being built by its volcanoes.

Why People Visit the Big Island

People come to the Big Island for the volcanoes, the coffee, and the sheer range of it — snow and lava, ranch and reef, all on one island. Its towns of Hilo, Kona, and Waimea give it two coasts and a paniolo heartland, and the land itself is still being built at the volcano's edge.
