The village made it official on December 31, 1995, when Wellington incorporated — today Florida's most populous village — and in 2002 it did something rarer than growing: it protected the reason it mattered, creating the Equestrian Preserve Overlay District over roughly nine thousand acres of horse country. Dozens of miles of public bridle trails thread the preserve, horses have their own crossings on the village's roads, and the neighborhoods around Lake Wellington, the wetland parks, and some of the state's best-regarded schools give the place its second identity: a green, planned family village on the Everglades' doorstep.
Turning that swamp into a working ranch took more than a name. Wellington's local land agent, Arthur William "Bink" Glisson, ran the Flying Cow Ranch on the ground and became the Acme Drainage District's first general manager, overseeing the canal network that kept the fields dry enough to farm. The reclaimed muck proved astonishingly fertile: citrus groves and vegetable fields spread across the old wetland, and the strawberry acreage grew until the ranch could claim the largest patch in the world. It was engineered agriculture on the grandest scale — a checkerboard of canals, pumps, and berms holding the Everglades at arm's length. (Spell it "Welington" and Palm Beach County will still know exactly where you mean.)
