This is our retro Los Angeles, California logo, printed in weathered charcoal on a retro vintage washed cap — an unstructured cotton dad hat that looks broken in from the day it arrives. The charcoal carries a faint wavering tone and a light speckle, so the print reads like it has been in the sun as long as the cap has.

The cap is 8.5 oz 100% cotton twill, enzyme washed and heavily brushed for a soft hand, with an unstructured six-panel crown, a mid-profile fit and a curved bill. A self-fabric strapback with a metal slider adjusts the fit and tucks away, and a self-fabric sweatband lines the inside. It is garment dyed with OEKO-TEX certified low-impact dyes, so every cap's color varies slightly — washed here means faded color and a weathered print, not distressed or frayed.

  • 100% cotton twill, 8.5 oz, enzyme washed and brushed
  • Unstructured six-panel crown, mid profile, curved bill
  • Self-fabric strapback with metal slider
  • One size fits most — hat sizes 6¾ to 7⅝
  • Logo printed in charcoal with a weathered tone
  • Hand wash cold, air dry; made to order

One size fits most, so it is an easy gift to get right: no size to guess, only the town. Each cap is made to order. Hand wash cold and air dry, and keep it out of the dryer. As with everything we make, profits support hunger relief.

The city's oldest nickname is older than the United States' hold on California. The pueblo's full name was El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles — the Town of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels — given for a Marian feast day kept by the Franciscans, who had named the river for it twelve years before the settlers arrived. Over two centuries the town outgrew the long Spanish name, but the “Angels” stayed. Los Angeles has been the City of Angels since 1781, and everything that came later simply borrowed it.

What grew around that block is a city built on arrival. Waves of newcomers — from Mexico, from China and Japan, from the American South and Midwest, from Korea, Armenia, Central America and beyond — each added a quarter of the map and a shelf of the pantry — a french dip downtown, taco trucks and birria after midnight, ramen in Little Tokyo, Korean barbecue west of it. The result is a metropolis measured in neighborhoods rather than a downtown: Boyle Heights and Highland Park on the east side, Leimert Park to the south, San Pedro at the harbor, Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks over the hill in the Valley. Mountains stand on three sides and the Pacific on the fourth, palms line the boulevards, and a river runs through the middle of it that most people forget is there. Angelenos navigate all of it by freeway, and they put a definite article in front of every one — the 405, the 110, the 10 — a habit no other American city shares. In late spring the coast disappears under a grey overcast they call June gloom, and it burns off by afternoon.

Why People Visit Los Angeles

Travelers come for the climate, the coast, and the culture, but the quietest surprise is the history: a two-hundred-and-forty-year-old pueblo tucked into the middle of a modern metropolis. History and everyday life sit side by side here in a way few American cities can match, and the founding block asks nothing but a walk.
