When Vice President Harry S. Truman became president on the death of Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945, they put it to a vote and renamed the town for him. The new sign went up on the highway - TRUMAN, TEXAS, DALLAS CITY LIMITS, 7 MILES - and because this was a farm town, not a shipyard, they christened it with milk instead of champagne, and the story made the papers. Truman never came, but he wrote, and the letter was read aloud.
