The residents refused. What they had were two eighteen-pounders and a limited supply of powder. For three days the town was bombarded and fired back, running short of shot, reportedly firing back the enemy's own. The squadron eventually withdrew. Stonington's houses were damaged, and remarkably few people were killed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe borough has never quite gotten over it, and should not.
