The republic lasted about twenty-five days before the United States Navy arrived and the whole question was settled by a larger war.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe improbable part is the afterlife. That rough sketch, made by amateurs in a country that barely existed, is now the flag of the most populous state in the union, flying over every school and courthouse in California. The original burned in San Francisco in 1906.
