A local named Porky Bickar had spent four years planning it: he helicoptered seventy old tires into the crater, soaked them in fuel and lit them. A Coast Guard pilot flew over and found the tires, and the words APRIL FOOL stamped in the snow.

The prank made international news and Sitka has dined on it since.
