Just off Praia do Norte, the Nazaré Canyon, an undersea canyon thousands of feet deep, runs almost to the shore and funnels Atlantic swells into peaks of enormous height; surfers have ridden waves here measured at more than 80 feet. The big-wave season runs roughly from October to March.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the headland stands the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, first built in 1577 to guard the coast and given its red lighthouse in 1903.
