He was fifty-seven. Behind him already were the French and Indian War, a shipwreck off Cuba, and a night tied to a tree while his captors built a fire. His soldiers called him Old Put.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHe was no polished officer and never claimed to be. He swore, he gambled, he lost as many fights as he won, and his men would have followed him anywhere.
