Across three days that August the warships shelled the town, the same summer the British would go on to burn Washington. The defenders answered with a pair of eighteen-pounders on a spit of land, ran short of powder more than once, sent for more, and kept firing until the ships gave up and sailed off. Hardly anyone on shore was killed. The guns still sit where they fought, aimed the way they were aimed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery coastal town seems to have an old cannon on its green that nobody can quite explain. Most were for drills and parades.
