Before that, the American game's wild tiles were flowers, which is why this Big Joker is younger than it looks.

Wear the tile that started more table arguments than any other. The Big Joker sits on the chest in old green ink and yellowed bone, a shirt for the player who hoards hers and the one who always asks if she can swap.

The sets of the 1920s had eight flowers and no jokers at all. From 1937 the league treated flowers as wild, and the count climbed as high as 24 in the early 1950s. By one expert's table, jokers first became mandatory around 1960, reached eight by the late 1960s, and settled beside eight flowers in 1971.

The rules that came with them are strict. A joker can fill a pung, kong, quint or sextet, never a single or a pair. It cannot be passed in the Charleston, and once discarded it is dead. The takeaway for your next game: for more than twenty years, the American wild card was a flower.

A garment-dyed tee in 6.1 oz ring-spun cotton with a relaxed cut, so each color looks a little lived in from the first wear.
