One collector's theory has the string read as a mayfly, then a crane, then a peacock and a sparrow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday the bird is usually a sparrow, and in Japan most often a peacock. Ours is the peacock on a stalk, and it sits under the name Sparrow Tile on purpose. The connection to the game's name is plausible but unproven. So choose your favorite story.
