The 1948 giant penguin, finally on an ornament.

In February 1948 Clearwater Beach woke up to a trail of 15-inch three-toed prints marching out of the Gulf. The prints kept appearing for ten years, up and down the coast, and a zoologist declared them the work of a 15-foot penguin. In 1988 a local man admitted he had made them, wearing 30-pound cast-iron feet and swinging his legs like a pendulum.

The hoax ran a decade because he was patient and the town was willing. Locals who remember the prints still argue about who knew. The iron feet survive.

Clearwater has a beach everyone photographs.
